This will be an exploration of how feminist ideas have shaped the filmmaker’s choices and strategies. Among the themes this will address:
1. The relationship of pleasure and politics;
2. The shape of interviews as conversations;
3. Making films with an awareness of preceding and contemporary feminist film practice;
4. How films are an act of politics.
SESSION II – JOURNEYS OF DESIRE

An illustrated talk that looks at the many possibilities opened up by feminist filmmaking praxis and theory.
SESSION III –MIND THE GAP: NAVIGATING RACE, CLASS AND GENDER IN DOCUMENTARY FILM
SENAIN KHESHGI
Drawing from her work with media organisations such as the groundbreaking film distributor, Women Make Movies, the mainstream US media outlets CNN and ABC News and also the South Asian Women's Creative Collective in NYC, Senain Kheshgi will speak about the influence that these experiences have had on her own approach to filmmaking. Although many alternative media outlets in the US present themselves as socially progressive and politically liberal, the issues of race, class and gender are never far below the surface.

SESSION I - THE WOUNDS OF HISTORY: GENDER, CINEMA AND SOCIAL HEALING / RECONCILIATION
DR IRA BHASKAR
This Session will explore how film form has engaged with the gendered experiences of conflict, violence and the possibilities of healing, justice and reconciliation. It will discuss both narrative films and draw on examples from documentary film practice to look at the politics of representation, but also at women’s struggles to live with traumatic memory. Examples from different cinemas will be used to discuss film, the narrativisation of trauma and the possibilities of healing.
SESSION II - CINEMA AS A STIMULUS FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

Using the documentary Project Kashmir as a starting point, the Session will explore the ways in which films can reach alternative audiences and ultimately affect change in the lives of viewers. In what ways can conflict resolution and social justice issues be addressed using new media and how can new methods and forms of storytelling be utilised to move audiences to action? In what ways can social networking and new media be harnessed to support filmmakers so that they can reach beyond the traditional audiences for documentaries?
